After months of research, data capture, sorting through old photos, and reviewing old GPS tracks, we’ve now officially launched SA Trail Map!

Our goal with this website is to provide a free map of hiking trails throughout Southern Africa – at the time of launch we have more than 200 trails listed across 7 South African provinces, as well as a few in Namibia.

The accuracy of our map relies on the contributions of hikers such as yourself – you can help us build this free resource in a number of ways:

Submitting photos & videos

We’d love to feature your pictures on our trail listings – you can click on the “Submit a Correction” button on any trail page to send us photos, or email them directly to [email protected].

If you have YouTube videos or Google Street View 360 Photos we can use, send us links to those too! We will link back to your preferred website on any submitted content that we use.

You can see a list of trails that need 360 photos, here.

Correcting your local trails

It would really help us out if you could double-check the details we have listed for the trails in your area. The easiest way to see what’s been listed near you, is to zoom our trail map to your locality.

If the description, contact details, difficulty, or pet-friendliness we listed are incorrect, you can let us know by clicking on the “Submit a Correction” button on the trail page, or by emailing us on [email protected].

Amending your local pet-friendly trails

We’ve already marked some trails as pet-friendly, but if we missed any that you know of you can tell us by clicking on the “Submit a Correction” button on the relevant trail page, or by emailing us on [email protected].

Adding new trails

If you regularly use Strava, Samsung Health, a handheld GPS, or some other way of tracking your walks, you can submit a new trail with your GPX track file so we can list it on the website.

We have several how-to videos here that explain how to send us GPX tracks from your records.

Submitting articles

If you are a writer or blogger and have an article about hiking, trail safety, or related topics that you’d like posted on our website, send it to us on [email protected].

We will link back to your preferred website on any submitted content that we use.

Telling your friends

We would love for you to share our website with your friends, family, and colleagues!

You can do so by posting a link to https://trailmap.co.za, a specific trail page from our website, or even this article to Facebook, by emailing the link to them, or sending by sending it to them on WhatsApp.

We also have “Share” buttons on the left-hand side of all the pages on our website, which makes sharing anything interesting you find a breeze.

Telling us about your hiking club

We are putting together a list of hiking clubs to feature on the website – if you’re a club member or owner and you’d like to have your details listed, please email us on [email protected].

Signing up for our newsletter

We plan to send out a regular newsletter containing new trails, articles & videos about hiking, and more.

You can sign up for our newsletter here.
